What Is MediaBay
MediaBay is Cubase's central content management system. It indexes, organizes, and provides quick access to every sound in your production environment: instrument presets, audio samples, loops, MIDI patterns, track presets, effect chain presets, and more. Instead of navigating folder structures and opening individual plugins to browse presets, MediaBay puts everything in one searchable, filterable interface.
Think of MediaBay as a search engine for sounds. Type a keyword, apply filters for category and style, preview results in tempo with your project, and load the selected sound directly into your arrangement. For a DAW with as many features and content libraries as Cubase, MediaBay is essential for finding what you need quickly.
For battle producers, MediaBay is a speed multiplier. The difference between a producer who knows how to search MediaBay efficiently and one who browses randomly through preset lists is minutes of saved time, minutes that go directly into creative work instead of sound hunting.
Opening MediaBay
- Press F5 (Windows) or F5 (Mac) to open the full MediaBay window.
- Alternatively, go to Media > MediaBay from the menu bar.
- For a compact browser within the project window, click the Right Zone button in the toolbar, then select the Media tab. This provides a streamlined browser without leaving the project window.

Browsing and Filtering Sounds
By Category
- In the Attribute Filter section, click the Category column.
- Select a category: Drum&Perc for drum sounds, Bass for bass presets, Synth Lead for lead sounds, Synth Pad for pads, etc.
- The results list filters to show only content matching your category selection.
- Apply additional filters: Sub Category narrows further (e.g., Drum&Perc > Kick, or Bass > Synth Bass).
By Style
- Click the Style column in the Attribute Filter.
- Select a genre: Hip Hop, Electronic, R&B, Pop, Rock, etc.
- Combined with category filtering, this narrows results to genre-appropriate sounds. Selecting Category: Bass and Style: Hip Hop shows only hip-hop bass presets.
By Text Search
- Type a keyword in the search bar: "808," "pad," "warm," "bright," or any descriptive term.
- MediaBay searches file names, tags, and metadata for matches.
- Combine text search with filters for precise results.
Previewing Sounds
- Select a sound in the results list.
- Click the Preview button (speaker icon) or press Space in the MediaBay window to play the sound.
- For instrument presets, MediaBay plays a default audition pattern. You can also play notes on your MIDI keyboard while a preset is selected to hear it with your own input.
- For audio files and loops, MediaBay plays the audio. Enable Align Beats to Project to hear loops in sync with your project tempo.
- For MIDI patterns, MediaBay plays the pattern through the currently selected instrument.
- Adjust the preview volume in the preview section so it does not blast over your project playback.
In-Context Preview
Start your project playing, then preview sounds in MediaBay. The previewed sound plays alongside your project, letting you hear how it fits with your existing tracks. This in-context audition is the fastest way to find sounds that complement your beat without the trial-and-error of loading and unloading presets.
Loading Sounds into Your Project
Instrument Presets
- Double-click an instrument preset in the results list. Cubase creates a new Instrument Track with the preset loaded and ready to play.
- Alternatively, drag the preset from MediaBay onto the track list to create a new track.
- Or, drag the preset onto an existing Instrument Track to replace its current preset.
Audio Files and Loops
- Drag an audio file from MediaBay directly onto the project timeline. Cubase creates an audio track and places the file at the drop position.
- If the file is a loop, Cubase can automatically tempo-match it to your project (Musical Mode).
Track Presets
Track presets save an entire track configuration: instrument, insert effects, sends, and EQ settings. Double-click a track preset to create a new track with the entire signal chain pre-configured. This is powerful for recalling favorite production setups.
Tagging and Organizing
Rating Sounds
- Select a sound in the results list.
- Assign a star rating (1-5 stars) in the attribute columns.
- Later, filter by rating to show only your top-rated sounds. Rate 5 for your absolute favorites, 4 for great alternatives, and ignore the rest.
Custom Tags
- Select one or more sounds in the results list.
- Edit the tag fields in the attribute section to add custom category, sub-category, or style tags.
- Tag your imported samples with genre and character labels so they become searchable alongside Cubase's stock content.
Adding Custom Scan Locations
- In the MediaBay Location Tree, navigate to your sample folder on disk.
- Enable scanning for that folder by checking the scan checkbox.
- MediaBay indexes the folder content, making it appear in search results alongside factory content.
- Organize your personal samples into logical folder structures before scanning for best results.
Fast Sound Selection for Battles
- Pre-battle prep: Rate your favorite 20-30 presets with 5 stars across different categories: drums, bass, keys, leads, pads.
- During battle - drums: Open the right zone media browser. Filter by Category: Drum&Perc, Rating: 5 stars. Your best drum kits appear instantly. Double-click to load. Under 10 seconds.
- During battle - bass: Filter by Category: Bass, Rating: 5 stars. Load your go-to bass preset. Under 10 seconds.
- During battle - melody: Filter by Category: Synth Lead or Piano, Rating: 5 stars. Load a lead sound. Under 10 seconds.
- Total sound selection time: Under 30 seconds for all primary instruments. The rest of the battle is pure creation.
FAQ
What is the difference between MediaBay and the right zone browser in Cubase?
They access the same content database. The right zone browser is a compact version that lives in the project window's right zone for quick access. MediaBay (F5) is the full-featured browser with more filtering options, detailed previewing, and management tools. Use the right zone for quick browsing during production and the full MediaBay for deep searches and organization.
Can MediaBay scan my own sample folders?
Yes. In MediaBay, you can add custom scan locations by navigating to your sample folder in the file browser section and enabling scanning. MediaBay indexes the files, making them searchable by name, type, and any metadata tags you add. This integrates your personal sample library with Cubase's built-in content.
Why is MediaBay not showing any results?
MediaBay requires an initial scan to index content. Go to MediaBay settings and check that the scan locations include your Cubase content folders. Click Rescan if needed. Also check that your filter settings are not too restrictive, which might hide matching results.
Can I preview loops in tempo with my project from MediaBay?
Yes. MediaBay previews audio files at your project's tempo when tempo sync is enabled in the preview section. Click the preview button on any audio file and it plays synced to your project. This lets you audition loops in context before loading them.
Does MediaBay work with third-party plugin presets?
MediaBay indexes presets from VST3 plugins that support the standard preset management system. Many third-party VST3 instruments and effects expose their presets to MediaBay. VST2 plugins typically manage presets internally and may not appear in MediaBay.
