Glide — A smooth, continuous pitch transition between two notes, also known as portamento, where the pitch slides from one note to the next rather than jumping instantly.
Glide Explained
When you play two consecutive notes on a piano, the pitch jumps instantly from the first note to the second. There is no transition. Glide changes this behavior by making the pitch slide smoothly between the two notes, sweeping through every frequency in between. The result is a fluid, vocal-like pitch movement that connects notes organically rather than discretely.
Glide has one primary parameter: time. The glide time (measured in milliseconds or a relative speed setting) determines how long the pitch transition takes. A short glide time (10-50 ms) creates a quick pitch snap that adds a subtle bend to the beginning of each note. A long glide time (200-1000 ms) creates a dramatic, sweeping slide that becomes a feature of the performance rather than a subtle embellishment.
Most synthesizers offer glide in two modes. In "always" mode, glide occurs between every pair of consecutive notes regardless of how they are played. In "legato" mode, glide only occurs when notes overlap, meaning you must hold the first note while pressing the second. Legato mode gives you control over which note transitions glide and which jump cleanly, allowing for more expressive performance.
How Producers Use It
The 808 glide is one of the most recognizable techniques in trap and hip-hop production. When an 808 bass note slides from one pitch to another, it creates a dramatic, rubber-band-like bass movement that adds energy and attitude to the low end. The technique is created by overlapping two 808 notes in the piano roll with glide enabled. The pitch sweeps between them, producing that signature sliding bass effect heard in countless modern tracks.
Lead synths benefit from glide as well. A monophonic lead with subtle glide time (20-40 ms) creates legato-style note transitions that feel smooth and connected, mimicking how a vocalist or wind player naturally transitions between pitches. This subtle touch makes programmed melodies feel more performed and less mechanical, adding human quality to MIDI sequences.
Creative glide applications include pitch-dive effects on kicks (a very fast downward glide at the start of each note), rising pitch transitions on synths building into a drop, and extreme glide times on bass sounds that turn a two-note pattern into a constantly sliding, evolving bass line.
Battle Tip: The 808 glide is a signature move that adds instant personality to bass patterns. Use it sparingly for maximum impact. One well-placed glide at the end of a four-bar phrase creates a moment of drama. Overusing it on every note change turns a technique into a gimmick. Strategic placement is what separates intentional production from default settings.
