ADSR

Beginner

Definition

ADSR — An envelope with four stages (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) that shapes how a sound parameter changes over time, from the moment a note is pressed until it fades to silence.

ADSR Explained

Every sound has a life cycle. A piano key struck hard rises to full volume instantly, holds briefly at peak intensity, settles into a sustained tone while the key is held, then fades when the key is released. ADSR is how synthesizers and samplers model this natural behavior using four adjustable controls.

Attack is the time it takes for the sound to go from silence to its maximum level after a note is triggered. A zero-millisecond attack means instant full volume. A slow attack creates a gradual fade-in, like a pad swelling into the mix. Decay is what happens next: the time it takes to drop from that peak level down to the sustain level. Sustain is not a time value but a level. It defines the volume the sound holds at while the note remains active. Release is the time it takes for the sound to fade from the sustain level to silence after the note is released.

These four parameters interact to create the fundamental character of any synthesized or sampled sound. A plucky bass has fast attack, fast decay, zero sustain, and short release. A lush pad has slow attack, moderate decay, high sustain, and long release. Understanding ADSR means understanding why sounds feel the way they do, and having the power to reshape them.

How Producers Use It

In beat making, ADSR envelopes control far more than just volume. Most synthesizers let you assign ADSR envelopes to filter cutoff, pitch, and other parameters. A filter envelope with fast attack and moderate decay creates the classic pluck sound heard in countless trap melodies. A pitch envelope with a slight downward sweep on attack gives kicks and 808s their signature punch.

For drum programming, ADSR determines the difference between a tight, punchy kit and a loose, ambient one. Shortening the release on hi-hat samples tightens the groove. Extending the decay on a snare adds body and room. These adjustments take seconds but transform the feel of an entire beat.

When designing bass sounds, the sustain parameter is critical. A high sustain level keeps the bass present throughout the entire note. A low sustain with a long decay creates a bass that hits hard then drops away, which works well for rhythmic bass patterns where you want space between notes.

Battle Tip: In a battle, your sounds need to hit with impact and clarity. Set your lead synth attack to near-zero so notes cut through the mix immediately. Judges react to sounds that demand attention from the first millisecond. A slow attack on a lead melody buries it behind drums and makes your beat feel soft.

How Producers Use It

What does ADSR stand for?
ADSR stands for Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release. These are the four stages that describe how a sound's volume (or other parameter) changes over time from the moment a note is triggered until it fades to silence.
How does ADSR affect an 808?
The ADSR envelope controls how your 808 behaves. A fast attack gives the 808 an immediate punch. A long decay and high sustain level keep the bass ringing out. A short release cuts the note cleanly when you lift the key. Adjusting these parameters determines whether your 808 hits hard and short or sustains into a long, rolling bass tone.
Where can I learn more about ADSR music production?
The Audeobox Learn Hub covers ADSR music production and related production concepts in depth. You can also apply what you learn by entering beat battles on the platform, where real competition forces you to put theory into practice.
