Definition

Envelope — A shape or curve that defines how a parameter (typically volume, filter cutoff, or pitch) changes over time from the moment a note is triggered until it fades to its resting state.

Envelope Explained

An envelope describes the life story of a sound in terms of a single parameter. The most common envelope is the amplitude (volume) envelope, which defines how loud a sound is at every moment from the instant you press a key to the moment it fades to silence. But envelopes are not limited to volume. Any parameter that changes over time can be controlled by an envelope: filter cutoff, pitch, effects depth, oscillator mix, or any other continuous value.

The ADSR envelope is the most widely used format, breaking the shape into four stages: Attack (rise to peak), Decay (fall to sustain level), Sustain (held level during note), and Release (fade to silence after note-off). However, envelopes can be more complex. Multi-stage envelopes offer additional breakpoints between these stages. Some synthesizers provide free-draw envelopes where you shape the curve manually with as many points as needed.

Envelopes are note-triggered. Each time you play a note, the envelope starts from the beginning and runs through its stages. This distinguishes envelopes from LFOs, which cycle continuously regardless of note events. When you hold a chord and play it again, each new note press restarts its envelope from the attack stage.

How Producers Use It

Filter envelopes are the most powerful sound design tool after the amplitude envelope. A filter envelope with fast attack and medium decay creates a plucky, percussive brightness that snaps on each note and quickly fades to a darker tone. This is the foundational technique behind trap bass sounds, acid bass lines, and countless synth textures. Changing just the filter envelope can make the same oscillator sound like a completely different instrument.

Pitch envelopes create the signature swoops and drops heard in 808s and synthesized drums. A subtle downward pitch envelope on a kick drum (starting a few semitones high and dropping to the root within 20-50 ms) gives the attack a punchy, snapping quality that a static pitch cannot achieve. An upward pitch envelope on a riser synth creates tension before a drop.

In sampling workflows, envelopes reshape existing sounds. A vocal chop with a long attack on its amplitude envelope becomes a swelling ambient texture instead of a rhythmic hit. Applying a fast envelope to a sustained pad sample turns it into a rhythmic stab. Envelopes let you repurpose any audio source into a new type of instrument.

Battle Tip: A well-crafted filter envelope is instant sound design. When building a bass sound for a battle, spend 30 seconds dialing in the filter envelope: fast attack, medium decay, low sustain. This gives your bass a punchy, animated character that static-filter bass sounds lack. Judges hear the difference between a flat bass tone and one that moves with intention.
